Lab 4: My First Ontology

  1. Model an ontology according to the methodology in the paper: Ontology Development 101. You may stick with your domain from exercise 3, choose a new one, or use a university as your domain. What does a university have? Faculties, programs, courses, professors, employees, students. Specify answers to the following questions:
    1. What exactly is the domain that the ontology will cover?
    2. For what purpose can you use the ontology?
    3. For what types of questions the information in the ontology should provide answers?
    4. Who will use and maintain the ontology?
  2. Include some instance information, for example, the HTW, yourself, our class, me, some relationships.
  3. Use the Protégè tool for creating the ontology with RDFS.
  4. Save the project as RDF files and have a look inside. You will see an RDFS file which contains the ontology and an RDF file which contains the instance data.

Prepare a report detailing what you did. You should work in groups of 2 or 3. Submit your written report (everyone should have their own copy submitted) to the Moodle area by 22.00 the evening before the session it is due. We will discuss it at the start of class.
