Master Project: Discovering Oberschöneweide using Mobile Devices

Oberschöneweide has a lot of history hidden behind its doors and around its corners. What companies were in these buildings? What was produced here? What was discovered here? Who lived here?

The Industriesalon is planning an outdoor museum for September 2010. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to set up a system for mobile devices that determines per GPS where you are and displays information from a database about the current location.

Your tasks will include

• figuring out how different mobile devices deal with GPS (yes, this has to work on multiple platforms)
• setting up a map of Oberschöneweide and attaching information to locations. The texts for the the locations will be written as part of an AWE course being offered in the SS 2010 by Susanne Reumschüssel.
• Did I mention that there will be multiple languages?
• Getting a first version set up and tested by September
• Observing the use of the system during the outdoor museum season.
• Formulating fixes needed and new functionality for the system
• Refactoring the system
• Making an easy-to-use editorial system that takes a map and some texts and produces a database that can be used by your system.
• How can visual narratives be included? Audio narratives?
• Can a companion web site be constructed from the same materials?

Your system will be an open source project. However, nothing prevents you from using the system to earn pots of money later on setting up the system for other places.
