Diplomandenseminar
Wintersemester 2002/2003
|
There will be three seminars offered this semester on the preparation
of a thesis. One seminar is an advance course for the current 7th semester, the
second the normal seminar for the 8th semester. The third one, this one, is a
chat-based seminar. IMI Students in the 7th and 8th semesters can choose which
seminar they want to attend. Students in the 7th semester may also wait until
next semester for attending a seminar. Prof. Barthel is teaching the face-to-face
seminars, I am teaching the chat-based one.
I need to have stickers
from everyone attending the course! If you are not in Berlin, please have a sticker
sent to me as soon as possible! We will start the week before classes begin.
The
seminar will take place in a teamspace chat: imi-ds
- Week 38 : Introductory chat
The topic will be mind
mapping. - Week 39: The formal structure of a thesis (26.9.)
Look
at the FAQ before class. (Imi -> inside -> Diplomarbeiten) - Week
40: Scientific writing (3.10.
Please read the paper "Hinweise
zum wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten" This is pretty much for historians ('cause
my husband wrote it), but have a look. Have a look around the net for other information!
For example: Einführung
in das wissenschaftliche Studieren, Arbeiten und Präsentieren (Uni Rostock).
This book is pretty good, too: "Studien-Arbeiten. Ein Leitfaden zur Vorbereitung,
Durchführung und Betreuung von Studien-, Diplom- und Doktorarbeiten am Beispiel
Informatik"
von Marcus Deininger, Horst Lichter, Ludewig Jochen - Week
41: (10.10.)
We will be discussing the paper from above! - Week 42: Presentation
of purpose statements
Each seminar participant must post their current purpose
statement at least two days in advance of class. We will go through each statement
together discussing what might be a problem with the statement. - Week 43:
Continuing with the purpose statements (24.10.)
- Week 44: Problems in Analysis
Each student needs to be prepared to discuss the current
state of the analysis in his or her project. - Week 45: Documenting design
We
will be discussing strategies for documenting the design process which will shortly
be beginning.
- Week 46: Preparing
to write
Each student needs to be prepared
to discuss the current state of his or her project. Will we need to refocus the
target at this point? What are your worries at the moment?
How on earth am I going to get 80 pages out of this?
A great link on correction signs can be found at http://www.mediaforum.ch/fachlexikon/masse_und_normen/korrekturzeichen.html - Week
47: Quoting and Footnotes
How do I do quoting correctly? Do I have to use footnotes?
Why and how. - Week 48: Showing off
What have you got working? Show us
if you can! How do you describe what is not working in your thesis? - Week
49: Organizing the submission process
- Week 50: No Christmas party this
year, sorry!
- Week 51: The New Year's Eve party is just mineral water this
