Violence update - September 1993
- 12.09.1993:
- Schleswig: The murderers of Moelln, who set fire to a house in Moelln in which a Turkish family lived, killing two family members, have been sentenced to the maximum sentence. One has been sentenced as an adult to life in prison, the other as a youth offender to 10 years in prison. Even though the two had said that their confessions were not true, the judge felt that this was just a fancy manoever of the defense lawyers. The judge noted that the confessions contained many details that were not public knowledge, and concluded that the two must be the murderers.
[My husband commented this morning, that this is indeed a political sentence. The government can now be pleased with itself that Justice Has Been Done, and carry on, without having to deal with the problems of xenophobia. Until the next time. - dww]
- Berlin : Tuesday afternoon at 15:50 (rush hour!) a group of 5 skinheads attempted to throw a citizen of Liberia off an S-Bahn train. They opened the doors of the car and tried to shove him out. He was extremely strong, and managed to hang on until the train reached a station. He fell on the platform and was injured, but managed to drag himself to the station police. The skins remained in the car and rode on to a destination unknown. Since no one (!) had yet volunteered information (although the car was full!) the Tagespiegel published a request for people to come forward.
[I removed a sticker "GAU Berlin, schliesst Euch gegen der Auslaenderschwemme zusammen!" (modulo der-die-das) from the S-Bahn on Tuesday, they are beginning to appear in many places]
- Mainz: The authors of "Der Einblick", the magazine listing the names and addresses of "enemies" has been traced to Mainz, where a posting to a bulliten board a few months ago asked for just such information. There was a telefone number in Mainz given, where an answering machine answered. The police do not yet know who exactly is behind this action.
- Austria: In the past three weeks around 10 letter bombs have exploded in various cities, 4 persons were injured. The mayor of Vienna lost 3 fingers and a lot of blood when a letter addressed to him exploded. The letter bombs have all been addressed to persons active against xenophobics or active for foreigners. The bombs are well made, with homemade nitro-glycerine in a drinking straw attached to a small detonation wire and powered by a little battery. The name given on the letters as the sender is the 16th century person who supposedly saved Austria from the Turkish invaders.
