Lab 0: Socio-Technical Systems

Please get together in groups of 3 or 4 persons. You will be randomly assigned to a group this week.

Discuss the following questions and come to some sort of agreement - or disagreement! If you agree, put your consensus in your report. If you disagree, document what each of the partners thinks. You each submit the same PDF with all of your names on it into the Moodle room on time.

  1. Explain why professional software that is developed for a customer is not simply the programs that have been developed and delivered.
  2. It is important for software teams to stay connected. How will your team work this semester if some of you can't meet face-to-face?
  3. There was much discussion in 2020 of using mobile phone tracking to discover individuals potentially exposed to Corona so that they could be located and quarantined. A short (1:14) video can be seen here on the Textonix site, a newspaper article is at the Tampa Bay Creative Loafing site. What are some of the societal challenges of building such software? Does it make a difference if the data is collected centrally from telephone company data or de-centrally using Bluetooth technology?
  4. What are the emergent properties that could show up with a system such as one described in #3?
  5. Why should we spend effort to fix legacy systems? Wouldn't it be better to just make a new system?
  6. You are a software product manager for a company developing educational software products based on scientific simulations. Explain why it is important to develop a product roadmap so that final product releases are available in the first three months of the year.
  7. Why should you implement a prototype before you start developing a new software product?

Your report should be in complete sentences in German or English.

There is a forum for submitting exercises in Moodle - please have your exercises online here by 22:00 the day before your CG exercise, that is, a week later, as indicated on the schedule. Please include all answers in one PDF and don't forget to put the names of each person involved on the report. Alternate formats such as ZIP files will be considered not submitted.

A report should include information on the class, the lab, the date, and all explanations should be in complete sentences, either in German or in English. Please include a short (4-5 sentence) reflection on how difficult each of you found this exercise and how long you spent in and out of class. All material in this exercise should reflect your own work. Submitting work of other groups (especially those from years past) or from the Internet or written by ChatGPT & friends is not acceptable. If your materials are not in on time, the exercise will be marked failed, 0 points
