Lab 1: Ethical Software Engineering

In the lecture we spoke about socio-technical systems and looked at codes of ethics from ACM and BCS. The German computing society Gesellschaft für Informatik also has ethical guidelines available (in German and in English). You will be randomly assigned to groups of 4-5 persons. You must choose one of the scenarios (German or these ones in English: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4). Don't spend too much time on the choice, you will need time for discussion!

Discuss the case in your group in light of the GI ethical guidelines! Can you agree on how the situation should be handled? It is not necessary to agree, there can be many ways of seeing a situation. Take notes on your discussion and create a picture explaining the dilemma(ta) that you will present to the group at the end of the lab session. There will be paper and colored pens available, or you can make a slide or two on your personal laptop.

Then put together a 2-3 page summary in English or in German of how your group evaluated the situation. If you disagree, make sure that all sides are reflected in the summary! Every member of the group submits a copy of the report that needs to include all the names of those participating.

If you are bored, you are welcome to read more of the case studies (in German) published on the Gewissensbits page.

The summary is due by 22:00 in Moodle the next week. Everyone in the group submits the same PDF, all names need to be on it and each student reflects on what, if anything, they learned in this exercise.
